Abstract:: Oral history interview with Richard Lewis about growing up in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, RI.
Notes:: Richard Lewis was born in Providence, Rhode Island on November 13, 1948 to parents of Cape Verdean and Azorean descent. Lewis spent the majority of his childhood in Fox Point, where he lived on South Main Street, Brook Street, and East Transit Street before moving to South Providence in 1959. Lewis returned to Fox Point and lived in a tenement home on Furnace Street from 1964 until 1967, when his family moved to East Providence. Lewis recalls his childhood in Fox Point fondly, with memories of days spent at the Boys Club and watching the Local 57 Engineers playing Industrial League fast-pitch softball on Gano Street. Richard also recalls spending time with Providence Friar greats at the rec center across from the Fox Point Elementary School. Lewis was part of a very large family, totaling 52 first cousins, whom he recalls spending the majority of his time with. Lewis left Fox Point in 1967 and graduated from high school in 1968. He attended technical college and became a licensed plumber for a few years before taking on a job driving tractor trailer trucks for one of New England's largest home heating oil companies. His career expanded, and United Road Service as a technical safety officer hired him. He moved to Ohio with his wife and 4 stepchildren and still resides there today.
