- Stella Santos was born in Fox Point in December of 1917. Her father, Joseph Lima, had come to Providence from Portugal four years previously. Lima's wife, Adeline Melo Lima, joined her husband in Fox Point in January of 1917 upon the death of their first child in Portugal. Eleven months after Adeline Melo Lima arrived in the Fox Point, Mary Estelle Santos, called Stella, was born. She would be the eldest of nine children born to Adeline and Joseph in Fox Point. Growing up, Santos went to neighborhood elementary schools; Arnold Street School and Thayer Street School. Santos went to Nathan Bishop Middle School and spent two years at Central High School. At 16, Santos began working for the Calart Flower Company, on Blount Street in Providence. The company made paper flower arrangements but shifted its operations during WWII to making zippers for the United States Air Force. Stella worked briefly for Sunshine Biscuit Company, packing crackers during a short stay in California in the mid 1940s. She was also employed as Fram Corporation, a company that made oil filters for cars. For 26 years, Santos worked the drill presses and bench lathes in the machine shop of Federal Products on Eddy Street. Stella Santos married in Mariano 'Mac' Santos at Holy Rosary Church in 1938. Stella Santos is a life-long member of Holy Rosary Church. She has lived in her home at 115 Arnold Street for over fifty years.
