Overview

Abstract:: Oral history interview with Robert Emlen about life in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, RI and the changes to the neighborhood over the last 30 years.
Notes:: Robert Emlen is the University curator and senior lecturer in the Department of American Civilization at Brown University. Emlen bought a house in Fox Point at 26 Thayer Street, and lived in that house from 1979-1986. During that time, Emlen worked as a curator for a new museum with the Rhode Island Historical Society, and as a curator at the RISD museum and a professor at RISD. He moved in 1986 to his place of employment, the Nightingale-Brown House where he was the Director of the John Nicholas Brown Center. After living at the JNBC, Emlen moved to Wayland Square and continues to live in the Providence area. In his interview, Emlen speaks about the history of his house, interacting with old timers in the neighborhood, and the changes hes seen in Fox Point since he first lived in the neighborhood 30 years ago.
