- Biographical/historical note: Maria Varela is an environmentalist, organizer, teacher and photographer who has been working on rural development projects with Latino communities in northern New Mexico for over 35 years. In 1962, Varela became immersed in the organizing tradition of the Civil Rights Movement when she joined SNCC and began teaching literacy in Southern black communities. In 1990 Varela was honored with a MacArthur Genius Fellowship that recognized her important contribution to Southwestern communities.Judy Richardson is an activist, educator and film producer whose work includes, among other things, the documentary series “Eyes on the Prize” and “Malcolm X: Make it Plain.” Richardson became a SNCC volunteer in 1963 when she moved to Atlanta to work in SNCC’s main office. She participated in organizing activities in Misssissippi during Freedom Summer 1964, in Lowndes County, Alaban in 1965 and worked on Julian Bonds’ successful first campaign for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives. Currently, Richardson speaks nationally about her work in film, depictions of the movement in the media and the relevance of the Movement’s legacy to contemporary issues. This transcript is taken from a panel discussion that Maria Varela and Judy Richardson participated in at Brown University in April, 2005 that also included Charlie Cobb.
