Description

Abstract:
Typical skyphos / kotyle. Two horizontal handles (oval in diameter) and ring foot. Body was made on a fast potter's wheel. There are no signs of breakagr. Ceramic, of pale/cream well levigated fabric, entirely finished (covered overall) with a black slip, except for the outside base (i.e. within the ring foot), where traces of a red slip are visible - this is presumably the same slip that has simply remained oxidized. Well fired, as the glass has a slightly metallic shine. Given the fabric, the vessel is probably not an Attic product, but more likely from somewhere in Greek South Italy - the red-slipped base and pale fabric suggest Puglia.
