Après Solferino

Description

Abstract:
View of a family following the Battle of Solferino in Solferino, Italy. One of the largest and bloodiest battles during the Second War of Italian Independence, it pitted the French army under Napoleon III and the Sardinian army under Victor Emmanuel II against the Austrian army under Franz Joseph. Although the allied armies defeated the Austrians, it resulted in many scenes like this one, with families dealing not only with destruction of their homes but loss of loved ones.
