French troops encamped inside the Lateran Gate at Rome

Description

Abstract:
A view of French troops inside of Rome. In October Garibaldi organized an invasion of Rome, but was beaten by French troops sent by Napoleon III. French troops were kept in Rome under the orders of Pope Pius IX.
