- Abstract:
- The artist Giacomelli presented to Emperor Napoleon III an album of eighteen watercolors after the Italian War of 1859. The allegorical frontispiece of the album is reproduced here. An accompanying newspaper article provided this explanantion of the allegory: "Napoleon III, in the middle of the composition, is crowned by Victory while Fame sounds a trumpet. To the [right] of the Emperor, Hope leads the cities that have not yet been liberated: Parma, Modena, Florence, and Bologna. The second group on the same side represents Sicily who awakens, Naples who sleeps, and Rome who lies in shadow. Below are the spirits of Discord. On the [left] of the Emperor, Piedmont gives her hand to Lombardy, who sadly shows her sister Venice whose provinces are still in chains."
