- In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt from the first page: "Although American academia has long forgotten John Dos Passos’s ‘Brazil on the Move’ (1963), the nonfiction work is luminary in its prose and passionate in its purpose. It deserves the sarne scholarly attention as the novels traditionally recognized as masterworks: ‘U.S.A.’ (1938), ‘Three Soldiers’ (1921), and ‘Manhattan Transfer’ (1925). Considered as travel literature, ‘Brazil on the Move’ represents a rebellion against the British literary conventions that dominated the genre from the 18th century through the 20th. John dos Passos embraces Brazilians as brethren without sacrificing equanimity of characterization. He documents culture, politics, personalities, vistas, and government programs. He defies imperialist conventions. With a painter's eye for color and a political strategist's ear for oratory, Dos Passos foretells the rise of Brazil as a global power."
