- Following the early death of their father, Captain James Brown, the four Brown brothers were raised by their uncle, Obadiah, who also introduced them into the family business. This document is Obadiah's maritime insurance book, in which he recorded policies that he had taken out for various trading ventures. The book spans the years between 1753 and 1762, when Obadiah died. It includes a brief reference to the loss of the Wheel of Fortune, a slave ship dispatched to Africa by Obadiah and his nephews, Nicholas and John, that was apparently "taken" by a French privateer.
