- Malcolm Reis was born in 1932 in Providence, Rhode Island. His parents were both from Cape Verde. Mr. Reis has three siblings; he is the youngest child. In this interview, Mr. Reis covers a wide range of topics relating both to his own life story and to the history of Fox Point. Mr. Reis gives many details about the Fox Point neighborhood in which he grew up, including such details as trips to the ice house, life with kerosene and coal stoves, and the horses that used to tread the streets, all in the context of a vibrant community where residents were considerably more sociable. Mr. Reis also recounts many instances of the discrimination he faced and faces as a man of Cape Verdean descent. Mr. Reis worked hard all his life in a number of jobs, though he spent the most years of his professional life working for the Narragansett Electric Company. In summary, Mr. Reis has much to contribute to the dialogue regarding what Fox Point once was and is now: a rare, longitudinal perspective among many others of his generation who left Fox Point.
