- Hilda Butterfield was born in 1922 in her home on Transit St. to Azorean parents. Much of her early life was spent on that street, an Irish part of the neighborhood. She attended Holy Rosary Church, Arnold Street Elementary School, Thayer Street School, Nathan Bishop Junior High and St. Xavier's Academy, a Catholic school run by the Sisters of Mercy. She recounts her memories of the Great Depression, the 1938 hurricane and World War II. She entered the workforce following high school as a foot-press operator at Gorham Manufacturing Co. Following her marriage she moved to East Providence, where she still lives, although she considers herself a proud Fox Pointer.
