Abstract:
Addressed to "Dear Sir." Draft of a form letter for seeking employment. First line: "If an unprovoked application for employment seems somewhat unusual in these days of system, agencies, & advertising, I trust that the circumstances surrounding this one may help to mitigate what would otherwise be obtrusive forwardness." On versos of [page 1] 1924 Jul 29 draft of letter to The Homeland Co.; [page 2] Horace L. Lawson's 1924 May 5 letter to HPL; [page 3] page 2 of Noah F. Whitaker's 1924 Jun 13 letter to HPL; and [page 4] page 1 of Noah F. Whitaker's 1924 Jun 13 letter to HPL. Page 4 of this draft is a 1-page list of possible recipients for the draft employment letter. Pasted below the list is HPL's advertisement for a position clipped from The New York Times for Sunday, Aug. 10, 1924. The draft letter and the newspapers advertisement were published in the "Preface" to H. P. Lovecraft, Selected Letters 1911-1924 [Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1965], xxvi-xxviii.
