Story originally written between the middle and end of November 1922 (SL 114, HPL to CAS on Nov. 12, 1922: "I am about to start another hell-raiser for it (i.e. Home Brew, entitled The Lurking Fear. SL 115, HPL to CAS on Dec. 2, 1922: "I decided to wait until the whole story was done before sending you anything ..."). First published in Home Brew, 2, No. 6 - 3, No. 3 (Jan-Apr 1923). Republished in Weird Tales, 11, No. 6 (Jun 1928).
