Description
- Abstract:
- This short piece describes the career of the Abbé Joseph Francis Correia da Serra during his years in the new nation of the United States between 1812 and 1820. Correia da Serra was not only a liberal Portuguese abbé and botanist but an enlightened cosmopolite who spoke five languages with ease. During his years in America, he dazzled everyone he met, including Thomas Jefferson. In 1816 he was named Portuguese minister to the United States, but his tenure lasted only four years because of his disagreement with America’s support for the Latin American colonial rebellions against the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies.
