A man in the crowd of Rio de Janeiro's 'Belle Époque': interstices in the chronicles of João do Rio

Description

Abstract:
The present study looks into texts written by João do Rio (1881-1921) from a hybridity perspective and addresses the principal question to search different approaches to understanding the interface between center-periphery in the Carioca ‘Belle Époque’ in the analysis of his writings. Zones of cultural contacts, like Rio de Janeiro, reveal the voices of the urban Brazil in the historical moment of its re-Europeanization, concerning the place of culture in the postcolonial context and the elite involved in the fantasy of Civilization. The idea of "in-betweenness" (Bhabha) in which cultural values are negotiated constantly and cultural differences are accepted and produce an "international culture" based on cultural hybridism can be seen as one of the greatest themes in João do Rio' s writings.
