Abstract:: In this interview, Hilda Calabro discusses attending Pembroke College as a "city girl," World War II and its effect on her education at Pembroke, and the treatment of female students by male faculty and peers. She then describes her relationship with Dean Morriss and other important role models, Pembroke's social rules and its lessons about appropriatebehavior for women. She discusses dating between Brown and Pembroke students, her opinions on the Brown/Pembroke merger, and her feelings on the changing conception of women's roles in society and at Brown.
Notes:: Class year: 1945; Biographical note: Hilda Antionette Calabro was a native of Providence, RI. After graduating from Brown, she earned her PhD in Modern Languages from Boston College and taught at the University of Rhode Island as a professor of Education.
