- Abstract:
- In part 1, Karen begins by discussing her decision to attend Brown, and her determination to succeed. Karen talks about a summer program she attended that was specifically for students who were deemed less likely to succeed at Brown. Karen discusses minority students at Brown and their importance to the community and the college, as well as her experiences as an African-American woman at Brown. Karen discusses the various faculty members who she knew as a student and then later again when she worked at brown in Administration. Karen talks about feeling excluded from the women’s movement as an African-American, and feeling that her energies should be directed towards black rights as a whole. Karen talks about her involvement with various student organizations, including summer activities. Karen talks about some of the difficulties with professors at Brown and the general community of students their lifestyles at school and in their free time. Karen begins part 2 discussing racism at Brown and in society at large, and how she generally felt it was not a problem at Brown except with one particular teacher. Part 2 ends with a discussion of the community she enjoyed and felt like a part of at Brown, and about her role as a Dean and experience as a black woman in administration at Brown.

- Biographical note: Karen was born in Burton, MA on September 19th, 1952. Karen received a BA from Brown University and a J.D. from Antioch School of Law. She has volunteered at educational programs and assistive centers throughout a career in legislation.
