- Abstract:
- Hypertension is very common in the Cape Verdean immigrant population of New England, but the burden of this disease has not been studied in this community. It is unknown how these patients understand their disease and manage their blood pressure given the language barrier they face with healthcare providers. This project explored attitudes towards and understanding of, hypertension among members of this community, and identified barriers to hypertension management. Our hypothesis was that the presence of a language barrier would limit patient understanding of hypertension as a chronic disease and may mask other barriers to hypertension management.
