- Abstract:
- Chronic pain afflicts more than 100 million American adults each year, and there is currently no reliable objective measure of the presence or severity of pain. Using a rodent model of acute and chronic pain, we tested the hypothesis that pain is associated with a pattern of spontaneous (stimulus-independent) electrical brain activity that is quantitatively different from that of a normal, non-pain condition. We also hypothesized that the changes in electrical brain activity associated with chronic pain can be reversed by administration of an experimental T-type calcium-channel blocker Z944.
