- Abstract:
- The U.S. government is portrayed as a big block of cheese being occupied by Democratic rats. A new crop of rats headed by New York newspaper editors James Gordon Bennett (Herald), Horace Greeley (Tribune), and Henry J. Raymond (Times) are shown ready to take over. They are lead by "Old Abe" Lincoln who says: "Come clear out, ye varmints! None of your sly nibble at our cheese. There's nothing for you here; there's not half enough for us--the Southern rats have carried off so much, we shan't be able to make it last our time!"
