- Etching by Adalbert Volck depicting General James H. Lane as Mephistopheles. The reason for this depiction is unclear, but it may be that southerners viewed Lane as unscrupulous and his actions on the field and in Congress as despicable. Lane helped numerous African Americans to flee slavery and personally put together one of the first African American regiments of the War
