Abstract:
Carl Schurz was an American statesman and reformer and a Union Army General in the American Civil War. He was the first German-born American elected to the U.S. Senate, where he represented Missouri from 1869 to 1875. He also served as Secretary of the Interior under Rutherford B. Hayes.
