Lincoln and Diogenes

Description

Abstract:
Diogenes, holding his lantern, sits above a portrait of Lincoln. The caption reads: "Diogenes his lantern needs no more, an honest man is found. The search is o'er." This is a reference to the story of Diogenes scouring Athens with his lantern in search of an honest man. Lincoln's likeness is from a February 9, 1864 photo by Anthony Berger.
