- Lincoln endorses Chew's letter to him, appealing for the release of his brother, John J. Chew, held as hostage with other men from Fredericksburg in Washington; forwards letter to Stanton ordering the release of J.J. Chew. (Also A.end.S. of May 23, 1864 by James A. Hardie, Col. Insps. Genl., ordering superintendent of the Old Capitol Prison to release John J. Chew.)
