Racism as a unique social determinant of mental health: Development of a didactic curriculum for psychiatry residents

Description

Abstract:
This study examines the development and implementation of a didactic curriculum for psychiatry residents on the impact of racism on mental health and disparities in psychiatric care, particularly those experienced by African Americans, and equip them will skills to address these issues in the clinical setting. They highlight how healthcare disparities are traditionally taught through the lens of cultural competence, and argue that the approach should shift towards and understanding the impact of power, privilege and oppression on marginalized groups. The curriculum that they constructed consisted for four 50 minute didactic sessions, separated across the four years of residency. The lectures focused on access to mental health care, racial bias in the diagnosis of psychosis, personal and implicit bias and structural and policy challenges. The paper also has an appendix that includes didactic content. The authors argue incorporating antiracist teaching as a core component of the residency curriculum highlight the importance of these issues to providers.
