Les plans de l'exposition: Projets primés en première ligne

Description

Abstract:
The French government initiated several architectural competitions for the buildings of the exhibition. After Eiffel's Tower project was accepted, another competition was launched in 1886 for the buildings surrounding it. This series of prints represents proposals from several architects for integrating the tower into the general plan of the galleries. The final buildings did not match exactly any of the plans shown in this print, even though they resembled them in many ways. Dutert (whose project is the first one at the top of the page) was put in charge of the famous Palais des machines, which stood behind the Eiffel Tower. The two galleries on each side of the tower were planned and built by Formigé, and served as Palais des beaux arts and Palais des arts libéraux (Formigé's project is at the bottom of the illustration). These were destroyed a few years after the fair.
