- The study aims at an intertextual, but mainly intercultural, reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Blithedale Romance" and José de Alencar's "Lucíola." It primarily focuses the elements that distinguish the novel, in the sense in which we understand it in Brazil and Portugal, and the novel, a genre typical of prose fiction produced in the United States, especially in the nineteenth century. Therefore, the social concern in Alencar's novels is discussed, contrasting it with the symbolic and allegorical element that predominates in Hawthorne's novel. The limitations and contradictions arising from the narrative practices of the two authors are highlighted. As the two novels are narrated in the first person, the article also studies the behavior of the narrators in relation to the protagonists, pointing out similarities and differences determined by historical and cultural factors. In the course of a comparative analysis, the article concludes that these distinctive features characterize the literary traditions of the two countries.
- O estudo visa a uma leitura não apenas intertextual, mas principalmente intercultural de "The Blithedale Romance" de Nathaniel Hawthorne e "Lucíola" de José de Alencar. Trata-se primeiramente dos elementos que distinguem o romance no sentido em que o entendemos no Brasil e em Portugal e o romance (em inglês), gênero típico da prosa de ficção produzida nos Estados Unidos, sobretudo no século XIX. Discute-se, para tanto, a preocupação com o social nos romances de Alencar, contrastando-a com o elemento simbólico e alegórico que predomina no romance de Hawthorne. Realçam-se aí as limitações e contradições decorrentes das práticas narrativas dos dois autores. Como os dois romances são narrados em primeira pessoa, o artigo focaliza também o comportamento dos narradores em relação às protagonistas, apontando semelhanças e diferenças determinadas por fatores históricos e culturais. Constata-se, no decorrer da análise comparativa, que estes elementos distintivos caracterizam as tradições literárias dos dois países.
