- In his study of search narrative, the mythographer Joseph Campbell states: "Woman, in the imagistic language of mythology, represents the totality of what can be known. The hero is the one who gets to know." But, if it is for the woman to represent the "wholeness of what can be known," how can she undertake her own quest? Tracing the search for the protagonist Joana in "Perto do Coração Selvagem" (Near the Wild Heart), the first of many "searches for women" in the novels of Clarice Lispector, I propose several answers to this question. Joana's quest consists of three stages: the first "feminine," the second "masculine," and the third "feminist"—with each stage contributing differently to the critique, openness and revision of the patriarchal structure Lispector already realizes in this her first novel.

O herói é aquele que consegue conhecer." Mas, se cabe à mulher representar a "totalidade do que pode ser conhecido", como pode ela empreender a sua própria busca? Traçando a busca da protagonista Joana em "Perto do Coração Selvagem", a primeira das muitas "buscas por mulheres" presentes nos romances de Clarice Lispector, proponho várias respostas a essa pergunta. A busca de Joana se compõe de três etapas: a primeira "feminina", a segunda "masculina", e a terceira "feminista" – com cada etapa contribuindo diferentemente para a crítica, a abertura e a revisão da temática e da estrutura patriarcal da busca, que Lispector realiza já neste seu primeiro romance.
