- This essay explores the reasons that led the Bahian poet António Frederico de Castro Alves to write the poem "Saudação a Palmares" (Salute to Palmares, 1870), addressing the Quilombo de Palmares, the most famous of the many communities established by escaped slaves in colonial and imperial Brazil. During the almost hundred years of its existence (1597-1694), Palmares constituted a serious threat to the stability of the slave system in seventeenth-century Brazil. Castro Alves's goals in writing a poem about Palmares in 1870 were clearly political. Castro Alves, who believed in the power of poetry as weapon of struggle in favor of the Abolitionist cause, composed "Saudação a Palmares" to promote slave rebellions and the most radical abolitionist initiatives as the best means of ending slavery in Brazil.
- Este ensaio investiga as razões que motivaram o poeta baiano António Frederico de Castro Alves a escrever o poema "Saudação a Palmares" (1870) sobre o Quilombo de Palmares, a mais famosa das muitas comunidades estabelecidas por escravos fugidos no Brasil colonial e imperial. Durante os quase cem anos de sua existência (1597-1694), Palmares constituiu uma séria ameaça à estabilidade do sistema escravocrata no Brasil do século XVII. Os objetivos de Castro Alves ao escrever em 1870 um poema sobre Palmares foram claramente políticos. Castro Alves, que acreditava no poder da poesia como arma de combate a favor da causa da Abolição, compõe "Saudação a Palmares" para promover as rebeliões de escravos e as iniciativas dos abolicionistas mais radicais como os melhores meios de se acabar com a escravidão no Brasil.
