Parking in a tow-away zone: women's literary studies in Brazil

Description

Abstract:
This essay traces the paths taken by women's literary criticism as from the late 1970s, focusing on the period after 1985. Most studies have focused on the nineteenth century, focusing in particular on issues such as the relationship between and the representation of national identity, the generally critical response by women to the national homogenization project and the women's press. There has been much less interest for the twentieth century. The author suggests that this lack of interest would be the result of modernists silencing the female voice, due to the difficult coexistence of modernism with difference and to its carnavalization of the image of women. The essay ends by asking in what direction literary studies on women may develop within the Brazilian context, which is characterized not by declared exclusion but by insidious partial inclusion of the other.
