Brazil, the open scene: theater in the 60s/90s

Description

Abstract:
This essay presents an assessment of the main currents in Brazilian theater over the last three decades, with special attention to the major playwrights and directors. The study is broken up into five periods, loosely connected with key developments in Brazilian political history: 1) before the 1964 military coup; 2) between 1964 and the promulgation of Institutional Act number 5 in late 1968; 3) from 1969 to the beginning of “Abertura” in 1978; 4) from 1978 to the redemocratization and the advent of the "New Republic" in 1985; 5) from 1985 to the present.
