Symbol and allegory in 'A meditação sobre o Tietê'

Description

Abstract:
The imagery of one of Mário de Andrade's less studied poems is interpreted from the standpoint of Ricoeur's hermeneutics and Walter Benjamin's theories of symbol and allegory. The images of the river merged with the musings of the poetic subject are seen as caustic reflections on São Paulo's process of modernization during the forties, with its contrasts of rising democracy, industrial progress, corrupt politics, poverty, and increasing loneliness and dehumanization of the self.
