Description
- Abstract:
- Using the models of Paradise and the Golden Age as starting points for the evaluation of discoveries inspired by the Divine Providence, Christopher Columbus and Pero Vaz de Caminha trace the history of the first contacts between indigenous and European civilizations. Given the changes that the discovery of America imposed on Renaissance historiography, the two authors are confronted with the double problem of precise representation and authority over the text. Even more revealing is that the New World seduces European sensibility and thought, thus creating for theoretical discourse a forum in which various narrative forms can mutually investigate their limits and credibility.
