Chronicles: 'The Gigolo of Words' and 'The Metamorphosis'

Description

Abstract:
In lieu of an abstract, this is an excerpt from the first page: "Four or five different groups of students from Farroupilha High School carne to my home with the sarne assignment, given by their teacher of Portuguese: to find out if I thought the study of Grammar was indispensable for learning and using our language or any other. Each group was armed with its own cassette tape recorder, decidedly the essential tool of modem pedagogy, and set about soliciting opinions. I immediately suspected that the teacher in question regularly read my column, tearing his hair otit daily over its affronts to the rules of grammar, and therefore was taking advantage of this opportunity to expose me. I was already preparing, albeit hastily, my defense (It was the proofreader's fault! Toe proofreader's fault!). But the students defused my suspicion before it was even manifested. They themselves had selected the names of the people to be interviewed. Are you sure that you didn't get the wrong Verissimo? No. Then let's get on with it."
