'Great Sertão: Veredas' and 'cordel' literature

Description

Abstract:
The object of this essay is to show the fusion of popular and erudite culture in João Guimarães Rosa' s "The Devil to Pay in the Backlands." Many of the folkloric motifs and much of the popular discourse which constitute the heroic cycle of the literatura de cordel are expressed in artistic fashion in the novel. Thus, the heroic spirit of the "knight of the backlands," constant in the cycles of the bandit and the valiant backlander in cordel, is present in Guimarães Rosa's novel. It is an example of one of the major cultural currents of the twentieth century in Brazil: the sharing of a cultural substratum by both popular and erudite writers.
