- This essay deals with female readership as it is portrayed in some Brazilian literary texts, and selects significant sections from eighteenth-century poetry to the contemporary novel. The main thesis is that the relationship between gender and reader goes through different stages, although male hegemony is always the dominant rule. Despite this asymmetry, there are convincing signs throughout history that prove how, despite conditions adverse to female reading practices, women's right to reading has been the object of struggles that achieved gains at a high price. Each generation has contributed to reaching today's apparent equality, where the boundary between literacy and illiteracy is no longer a gender issue, but a social problem in which women, African-Americans and the poor are segregated from the world of reading.
- Este ensaio trata da leitura feminina tal como é retratada em alguns textos literários brasileiros. Seleciona trechos significativos desde a poesia do século XVIII até o romance contemporâneo. Sua tese principal é que a relação entre gênero e leitor passa por diferentes estágios, embora a hegemonia masculina seja sempre a regra dominante. Apesar dessa assimetria, encontram-se sinais convincentes ao longo da história de que, não obstante as condições adversas às práticas da leitura feminina, o direito da mulher à leitura foi objeto de lutas que o conquistaram a alto preço. Cada geração o estendeu até a aparente igualdade da situação atual, em que o limite entre alfabetização e analfabetismo já não é mais uma questão de gênero, mas um problema social, em que mulheres, negros e pobres são segregados do mundo da leitura.
