The ironic view in Henry James's ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ and in Machado de Assis's ‘Epitaph of a Small Winner’

Description

Abstract:
The ironic vision of Machado de Assis and Henry James is both an aesthetic phenomenon and a stylistic instrument. Two novels writen in 1880 use irony to express the disillusionment and alienation of the societies they portray. While Machado, embedded in caricature, reveals a revolutionary spirit, Henry James encounters confusion. Side by side, but without a common influence or reception, 'The Portrait of a Lady' and 'Epitaph of a Small Winner' prove the thesis that irony is both the instrument and the vision of the Gentile world of the turn of the century.
