- My dissertation explores the intellectual project of the Peruvian scientist and antiquarian Mariano de Rivero (1798-1857), focusing on a pioneering concept of technology that emerges in his writings. Rivero’s project is intellectually based on his scientific engagement with modern geology, his professional training as mining engineer, and his disciplinary commitment to new antiquarian and archeological practices. However, his encounter with the historiographical, epistemological and material ruins of Colonial Peru through extensive research and fieldwork fostered a transatlantic realignment of his paradigms. Rivero’s concept of technology will emerge as a critical method to rearticulate those ruins: thinking and acting technologically is a means to guarantee a sustainable future. In three chapters, I examine in dialogue with Colonial texts how Rivero addresses the territory and its natural resources (especially mining), the Pre-Columbian past and its material culture, and the knowledge and political condition of indigenous peoples. Drawing on his published works and my own archival research, I demonstrate how Rivero’s concept of technology serves as an epistemological principle to entangle the land, the past, and the peoples of early postcolonial Peru within a modern temporality from which the Enlightenment scholars and the emerging nineteenth century disciplines, discourses, and politics exclude them. Set against the emerging international backdrop of an imperial craving for foreign natural resources, a ‘scientifically’ supported racism, and a renovated political exclusion of subaltern populations, my dissertation advances new perspectives to existing work on Andean environmental history, indigenous studies, science and technology studies, and nation-building narratives.
