Description
- Abstract:
- Based on a research made at Machado de Assis' personal library, this essay tries to identify possible inspiration sources (related to Psychiatry studies dated from the 19th century) for the fiction of this author. One of the conclusions is that most of the psychiatric books found in the writer's library were published from 1877 to 1881, precisely the period when Machado started the second and best stage of his literature. In other words, books such as 'Les Maladies de la Memoire' may have had influence on Machado and his work. This hypothesis gets clear when ‘O lapso’ and ‘O alienista’ are analysed, revealing, thus, how the irony and the humour of Machado deal with troubled aspects of the human psyche.
