- The challenge of being successful from local to national levels. Huge effect of 9/11 on immigrant communities. Ana Maria immigrated from Colombia at the age of 17; she worked in a community center in Staten Island, became acquainted with Make the Road By Walking, became its Executive Director, and guided its expansion to Make The Road New York. She later became Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy.
