- Cyberbullying is increasingly understood to be implicated in the mental health of adolescents, with themes relating to romantic and sexual relationships being one key area for consideration. Qualitative analysis of the digital communication of adolescents allows for research into adolescent social interactions without the influence of an adult observer. This work applies a mixed inductive-deductive process to establish a qualitative coding scheme for examination of how romantic/sexual relationships and sexual orientation appear in the digital communications of adolescents aged 13-17. The scheme reflects three key dimensions of digital communications about romance and sexuality: 1) Degree of involvement of the persons in the conversation as members of the relationship/sexual behavior, 2) Nature and events of the relationship/sexual behavior, and 3) Characteristics of the people involved in the relationship or sexual behavior. An additional coding category focuses on specific topics of interest, notably discussion of/requests for sexually explicit imagery. This coding scheme will allow for thematic analysis of an existing set of pseudonymized adolescent digital communications.
