- In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt from the first page: "When one examines Brazilian literature at the present moment, one quickly recognizes a certain national instinct as one of this literature's most salient aspects. Poetry, the novel - ideas manifested in all literary forms seek to clothe themselves in the nation's colors, and there is no denying that this preoccupation is evidence of vitality and that it bodes well for the future. The traditions of Gonçalves Dias, Porto-Alegre, and Magalhães have in this way been taken up by the generation now in its prime, and by the rising generation, just as these men continued the traditions of Basílio da Gama and Santa Rita Durão. It goes without saying that this universal agreement is for the good. Prose writers and poets, in investigating Brazilian life and American nature, will find a rich source of inspiration and will help grant national thought its own unique form. This other independence lacks a Seventh of September and a field oflpiranga. It will not be achieved in a day, but gradually, so that it might last all the longer. It will not be the work of one generation, nor of two. Many will contribute until it is achieved in full."
