- In this interview, Patric Tariq Mellet, a Cape Town native and author of The Truth About Cape Town Slavery, reflects on his early awakening to the realities of enslavement and his lifelong desire to make a difference, first sparked at the age of eight. He discusses navigating South Africa’s complex racial categories, identifying as African, Indian, and white, while embracing the term “comisa,” meaning “sweet water for all.” Mellet also delves into the vast scale of the slave trade and its enduring impact on the lives and legacies of its descendants. Please be advised that this interview may contain stories of trauma, both personal and community-wide related to the legacies of racial slavery and colonialism.
