- Oral History Interview with Cherise Weaver, Liverpool 8–born arts educator and Head of EDI at LIPA, on family lineage, artistic and community work, and learning/teaching Liverpool’s slavery history. Topics include Delado and Carnival, local activists and teachers, the city’s architectural legacies of enslavement, and freedom as collective visibility and cultural continuity. - Biographical/historical note: Cherise Weaver is a Liverpool-born actress, director, producer, teacher, mentor and facilitator with over twenty-five years of experience across theatre, film, television and community production. She has worked in many of Liverpool’s leading theatres, toured nationally, and more recently founded her own company, Parliament Street Productions. Alongside her creative practice, she has held community roles including Community Producer at National Museums Liverpool and Community Leader with the University of Liverpool’s Shaping Futures team. Her Practice as Research MA marked a turning point, focusing on the story of Elroy Josephz, the first Black dance lecturer to teach African and Jazz dance at a Liverpool university. This work deepened her commitment to visibility, representation and amplifying unheard voices. She went on to the School for Social Entrepreneurs, where she began shaping ideas into platforms for change. Driven by this vision, Cherise co-founded the Black Actors’ Collective in Liverpool, a network supporting the growth and collaboration of Black and Black mixed creatives, and more recently co-founded Black Stage Pass, a platform championing Black artists globally while holding the industry accountable on diversity. Both initiatives create pathways to access, visibility and leadership for the next generation. Cherise’s leadership practice has been strengthened by her time on the Leadership Programme, where she drew inspiration from trailblazers such as Sonia Bassey MBE and grounded her instinctive work in academic research. Her approach is rooted in lifting others as she climbs, and her vision is clear: to build sustainable structures where Black leadership in the arts is not the exception but the expectation.
