- Abstract:
- Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder that classically manifests as rhythmic shaking of the upper limbs during purposeful movement. The pathophysiology of ET is still an area of active research, but current neuroimaging and pathological data suggests cerebellar involvement, which is critical for integrating sensorimotor information and motor learning. To date, very few studies have investigated the effect ET has on motor adaptation. In this study, we plan to use a motor adaptation task developed on the NIMH MonkeyLogic software in MATLAB to assess a person’s ability to adapt to novel visuomotor scenarios when a directional bias is introduced into the controls. We hypothesize that ET patients will take longer to adapt to the new scenarios due to cerebellar deficits. Further trials will be conducted after ET patients receive either deep brain stimulation (DBS) or high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to assess the efficacy of treatment paradigms.
