- Elegies is a collection of creative non-fiction essays about motherhood, mourning, and early childhood death. Each essay combines the author's personal experience and family history of loss with a different research topic. In the first essay, "DNA," the author discusses the artist Prince and his song "Sex in the Summer," which includes sound effects from his son's ultrasound; in the second essay, "Shall," the author explores the Supreme Court case Castle Rock v. Gonzales and the treatment of women and children by law enforcement and in our archival memory; the third essay, "Chrysalis," features original interviews with Neonatal Itensive Care Unit nurses, Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, and other physicians who have firsthand experience in a medical space that is uniquely positioned between and across both life and death; the final essay, "Shattered Glass," analyzes Toni Morrison's "Beloved," engaging with Morrison's use of repetition to sketch the contours of traumatic memory in the novel. The stories in this collection are devastating. They are beautiful and hopeful, but they are violent and shadowed forever by the loss that made them exist as stories to tell in the first place.
