- In this interview, Nazely Valentyn traces her life from childhood on farms in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, through early motherhood, widowhood, and seasonal labor, to her transition into community health work and activism. She reflects on the challenges of farm labor, poverty, and displacement, and describes how training and resilience led her into HIV/TB counseling, grassroots organizing, and educational initiatives. Valentyn highlights her role in founding projects in Simondium—including youth programs and a kindergarten—and her enduring commitment to community improvement, faith, and family. Please be advised that this interview may contain stories of trauma, both personal and community-wide related to the legacies of racial slavery and colonialism.
