Analysis of nutrition and physical activity best practice topics needed, chosen, and not chosen among family child care providers in the intervention arm of the Healthy Start / Comienzos Sanos study.

Description

Abstract:
Background: Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic with wide-reaching health consequences. Family Child Care Homes (FCCH) provide daytime care for nearly 2 million U.S. children and can have a profound effect on their nutrition and physical activity habits. The Healthy Start / Comienzos Sanos intervention study aimed to improve the nutrition and physical activity environments of FCCHs in Rhode Island by identifying and then improving the nutrition and physical activity practices of FCCH providers. Objective: To examine whether the nutrition and physical activity practices of FCCH providers were meeting or not meeting best practices, to gain understanding of which topics were more frequently chosen than others. Methods:. FCCH providers (n=60) in the Healthy Start / Comienzos Sanos intervention study arm received a tailored feedback form listing the nutrition and physical activity best practices (n=22) that they met or did not meet. Then they worked with a peer coach to choose eight topics (from those they did not meet) to work on, one topic for a month, for a total of eight months. Descriptive statistics for topics needed, chosen, and not chosen, as well as Fisher analysis of topics needed by topics chosen were conducted. Results: Over 90% of providers needed to work on Mealtime Environment, Nutrition Education, Role Modeling, Encouragement, Water, Vegetables, Healthy Snacks, Whole Grains, Policies, and Adult-Led Physical Activity. The most frequently chosen topics to work on were Healthy Snacks, Whole Grains, Vegetables, Adult Led Physical Activity, and Physical Activity. The least frequently chosen topics were Self-regulation, Encouragement, Physical Activity Education, and High Fat Meats. These results are discussed in reference to domains of Self-determination Theory and Social Cognitive Theory.
