- As theorized by Umberto Eco, literary texts are inherently “open”, their interpretation becoming autonomous from authorial intention. This tension intensifies in unfinished and unpublished works, whose instability complicates both hermeneutic and editorial practices. This paper examines these issues through a genetic analysis of The Duke of Parma, an incomplete drama by Fernando Pessoa. When a text survives only in fragments, interpretation becomes especially unstable, echoing Jerome McGann’s notion of hermeneutics as a “house built of sand”. Genetic criticism must therefore interpret variants without a final version as reference. Drawing on the concept of macro-variant (Almuth Grésillon) and Gianfranco Contini’s systemic approach to variation, the paper identifies patterns in Pessoa’s usus scribendi, focusing on character construction, dramatic action, and performative indications.

Esta tensão intensifica-se em obras inacabadas e inéditas, cuja instabilidade desafia tanto a hermenêutica como a edição. Este artigo examina estas questões através de uma análise genética de The Duke of Parma, drama incompleto de Fernando Pessoa. Quando o texto subsiste apenas de forma fragmentária, a interpretação torna-se particularmente instável, ecoando a noção de Jerome McGann de uma hermenêutica como “casa de areia”. A crítica genética deve, assim, interpretar variantes sem o apoio de uma versão final. Com base no conceito de macrovariante (Almuth Grésillon) e na abordagem sistémica de Gianfranco Contini, o artigo identifica padrões do usus scribendi de Pessoa, com foco na construção das personagens, na acção dramática e nas indicações performativas.
